Argan - The tree of life

The Argan (Argania spinosa) is a species of tree endemic to the calcareous semi-desert Sousvalley of southwestern Morocco. Argan trees grow to 8-10 metres high and live up to 150–200 years. Known by the Moroccan Berber community as the "Tree of Life", the Argan tree has supported the people of these arid regions and their livestock for centuries.

Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the tree and is one of the rarest and most expensive oils in the world. Berber women have used Argan oil for centuries to protect and nourish their skin, hair and nails from the harsh conditions in which they live.

Argan oil contains 80% unsaturated fatty acids and is more resistant to oxidation than olive oil. Argan oil also contains 0.8% unsaponifiables (a large group of compounds also known as plant sterols or sterolins). Sterolins improve skin metabolism, reduce inflammation and promote excellent moisture retention. The active substances called triterpenoids that occur in Argan Oil offer amazing skin protection benefits. These include tissue healing (scars), anti-inflammatory, sun-protective and disinfectant properties.

Pure Argan oil is sold in Morocco as a luxury item, and is difficult to find for sale outside the region of production. The product is of increasing interest to cosmetics companies in Europe. It used to be difficult to buy the oil outside Morocco, but since 2001-2002 it has become a fashionable product in Europe and North America. It is now widely available in specialist shops and occasionally in supermarkets.
